I opened up my email this morning to a message from imagine gnats regarding Selfish Sewing Week Spring 2016 and thought… What? I’m on Bloglovin’, Pinterest, the interwebs in general, how did I miss this? I wonder who decides the dates of these things; can you send me an email after your meeting and let me know the date so that I can update my calendars, both electronic and Moleskine, so I am aware of the event at least three months in advance? Because that’s just how we roll around here.
Anyway, my best laid crafting plans have not worked out in the past couple of weeks. For starters, I am still waiting on my lovely Liberty and Nani Iro fabrics to make an appearance. This is the fault of no one other than myself for trying to save a buck on shipping, and having the package sent to my package mule stateside instead of directly to myself in Canada. Ugh. However, I was proactive and prepared the pattern, made a muslin and the necessary alterations to the Bess top on my to-make list, so I haven’t been completely idle.
My second fail was the Elise top. I did not pre-wash the fabric as I was so giddy to begin, and the shirt shrunk in length and now hits the waistband of my jeans. Sigh. On a positive note though, the pattern was great, I wore and loved the top twice before I shrunk it in the wash, so I will likely start with that pattern again this week, after doing a load of laundry today.
The third issue is another enormous project being undertaken by my husband right now. He is converting a tractor trailer into an RV hauler for our fifth wheel trailer. This doesn’t exactly involve me a whole lot, as I don’t do sheet metal fabrication, but there’s always something to discuss and decisions to be made and it has been mentally all-consuming for the last few weeks. After three straight days of stripping chrome, welding and grinding in the garage, he took the truck in for a paint job. Maybe now he can help me hem my floral dress!
I think the fourth problem I am having is in the creativity department. The weather here in Southern Ontario has been less than seasonal. This past week was snowy and very cold for April, around -6 °C, and last night we were treated to freezing rain and snow pellets. I feel like everyone is walking around depressed and grumpy for lack of spring sunshine, myself included. This time of year I am usually seen pushing my stroller on hour long walks around town in my running shoes, but we have been doing minimal walking thus far because I just don’t feel motivated in the cold. Lately we have been doing more wine drinking under blankets with movies than actual moving. Blah.
- remake that Elise top in the same cotton jersey as the first attempt (top fabric)
- prepare the Maritime Shorts pattern, and make a muslin to ensure fit. Eventually make a finished pair from the bottom fabric, a Parson Grey cotton canvas that I picked up last week. It’s a little ambitious, but I think I can get to the muslin stage of the shorts by Sunday.
Cheers to best laid plans!
