The two fabric orders I placed containing backing fabric for my Night Sky quilt and William’s toddler bed quilt arrived on Thursday. This means I should have two quilt WIPs finished soon- I hope! We have had a lot of appointments lately and the last time I got to sit at my machine was last weekend when I sewed a pile of my husbands jeans that needed to be patched up. Not exactly a fun project, but something that needed to be done.
I had already prepared the bottom half of the backing for the toddler quilt using the raindrop print from April Showers, and used some scraps from the top to make a patchwork row. I like adding a little row like this or a spare block to the back, so fun. I ordered a cute blue animal print from the Heartwood collection for the backing, as well as a fat quarter bundle to make a quilt for the new baby; I really like the grey, blue and lime combination and I can’t wait to start the baby quilt. I had better get going on this, baby arrives in six weeks!
Deciding on the quilting is sometimes difficult for me. I had originally planned on ditch quilting the whole thing and then maybe going in with some FMQ in the centre square patchwork areas, but I wasn’t settled on this plan. Next I found some inspiration on Instagram, an all-over wavy design, which I thought I would do on a diagonal… and this is what I decided to go with when I sat down at my machine today.
Let’s keep it real here- it didn’t work out. My FMQ was wobbly, and I had trouble keeping the lines equally spaced apart, despite trying two different widths. I’m pretty sure this stitch pattern was long-armed, and I just couldn’t recreate the vision in my head. Fortunately I only quilted a small area, and I won’t have to spend a lot of time picking stitches.
After staring at the top for a few minutes, I decided to try another idea altogether and FMQ on the white around the inner patchwork squares. I took a few deep breaths and took my time, and was pleased with how the first square turned out… so I kept going. I am about a third of the way done the FMQ now, and I will also add a bit of ditch quilting.
I’m looking forward to crossing this little quilt off my WIP list, and for William to have another sleeping blanket in rotation, let’s hope he takes to it! I’m still not sure how I am going to quilt the Night Sky quilt and am searching online for inspiration, but I did pick up some grey variagated thread for it, so that’s a start.
What WIPs are you quilting right now?
