Time is flying and Mother’s Day is sneaking up on us whether we like it or not! My mom and dad came to visit a few weekends ago, bringing with them my fabric order, as well as a few yards of extra fabric that my mom wants made into pillows and “a table runner or something”. This happens every time! My mom has a nice selection of custom throw pillows in her home that rotate with the seasons.
Knowing that I have a quilt in the planning stages and the fabric sitting in my stash since last March, I want to get rolling on that before I make any promises. Not to mention the two or three tops and one dress I currently have on the go. So, I decided that I would make her a table runner of sorts, a mug rug, for her desk. My mom is a very important and busy lady in her office, and I’m sure she drinks a lot of coffee while there.
Since this is just a one-off block, I choose something a little fancy. I pulled my copy of Vintage Quilt Revival off the shelf and chose the Cross and Crown block, downsizing the printed copies to 66% of their intended size, as I wanted a block about 8″ square. After dusting off my Add-A-Quarter ruler and remembering to pin to the backside of the paper copy (I won’t lie, there were some blank stares and guessing games going on until I remembered how the process goes!) I had the four quarters of the block pieced in under an hour, including my re-learning curve. I enjoyed a change from basic piecing for this little project, it was something different. I think I might incorporate some foundation pieced blocks into the next quilt.
The quilting on this little block is just stitched in the ditch with coordinating grey thread, as for me, it’s usually about the piecing. I mailed the package today, and it should arrive in a couple of days. I hope this little mug rug is both beautiful and useful to my amazing mom. Happy Mother’s Day!
